People Helping People is a list of charitable causes in our area that need donations or volunteers. The Beacon Journal has not investigated these causes, so donors should verify their worthiness and the tax-deductibility of contributions. Call Mary Beth Breckenridge, 330-996-3756.Williard Food Pantry, 742 Johnston St.. Akron 44306, helps the poor in Greater Akron meet their food needs. The program operates out of Williard United Church of Christ.The food pantry is seeking money to buy food from the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. Checks should be made payable to Williard UCC, with “Food Pantry” written on the memo line. They can be mailed.The pantry also needs donations of peanut butter and cereal. To arrange to drop off a food donation or have one picked up, leave a message at 330-253-8583.Big Brothers & Sisters of Portage, 705 Oakwood St., Suite 103, Ravenna, OH 44266, matches adult volunteers to youths in one-to-one mentoring relationships. Volunteers must be 18 or older and commit 12 hours a month for one year to spend time with their Little Brother or Little Sister, sharing activities both enjoy.The organization needs the following:• Big sister volunteers to be matched to girls 11 to 16 years old in Atwater, Mogadore, Suffield and Streetsboro.• Big brother volunteers in all areas of the county.• Volunteers to join its advisory board and assist in special events and volunteer recruitment. Advisory board volunteers commit to attending one meeting a month, at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday, as well as special events.• Donors to commit to covering the costs associated with a mentor-child match for a month or more.
